Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. At the core of Ayurveda are the following principles:
Panchamahabhutas: The human body is composed of five elements – earth, water, fire, air, and ether. These elements combine in different ways to form the three doshas or body types – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Doshas: The doshas are the primary forces that govern the human body and mind. Each person has a unique combination of doshas that determine their physical and mental characteristics, as well as their vulnerabilities to certain illnesses and imbalances.
Agni: Agni refers to the digestive fire, which is responsible for transforming food into energy and nutrients that the body can use.
Dhatu: Dhatu refers to the seven tissues of the body – plasma, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow, and reproductive tissue – that nourish and support the body.
Malas: Malas are the waste products of the body, including urine, feces, and sweat. They are important indicators of the body’s health and vitality.
Prakriti: Prakriti refers to a person’s innate constitution, which is determined by their doshic balance at birth.
Vikriti: Vikriti refers to a person’s current doshic balance, which can be influenced by factors such as diet, lifestyle, stress, and environmental factors.
